Friday was a fun day of planting, sorting, and hoola hooping! We spent the morning at First Step Right School before heading off to Hluhluwe for the weekend, via Victoria Street Market. I also popped in to Empangeni High School to see a project supported the Stratford upon Avon Rotary Club.

 Alison, Doreen and Hana each helped out with teaching and other activities.




















Hana started work on some videos to take back to the UK and share with her Beavers group.
 Planting spinach, beetroot, cabbages and onions. The children love to be involved. The garden is a great source of extra veggies but is also a wonderful learning resource for the school. Built almost three years ago, we're so glad it continues to be a success. 



 Carlos at Victoria Street Market makes some amazing beadwork animals. We have ordered  a few bits and pieces from him to sell back in the UK, raising funds for GAGA. 



We're sad that GAGA ambassador Karen will be leaving SA today, due to a family emergency. Huge thanks for all that you do for GAGA and the projects we support, and love to all your family.

It's always great to hear back from people who have visited the projects GAGA UK supports. I'm proud to support the projects, and so are the GAGA trustees, but it's always useful to hear other peoples' views and we wanted to share these with you.  Here is a piece of writing kindly sent in by Alison... It was a great privilege to be able to join the group of volunteers who went to KZN in March this year. It was my first time in SA and also my first time volunteering in this way. All of the projects we visited which GAGA support were amazing each in their own way. First Step Right School manages incredibly well considering what they haven’t got. Gael is totally dedicated and has the interest of the children at heart in all she does. She has a clear idea of what is still needed and is excellent at delegating practical jobs to volunteers. Thursday was a showing off kind of day. I’m so proud to be a part of GAGA and of our supporters and donors being able to do so much good. Gogo Doreen headed off to First Step Right to share the books she has bought for the school with the teachers. She has purchased a reading scheme for the school which has books which progress in levels, and come with teachers’ resources. Gael and Allison to 1000 Hills. We were shown around by Sonto, Sibo and Karen who all shared the wonderful work of the centre with us. Sibo shared some of his wisdom, saying that we can't teach children to be who they want to be if the parents don't know they can be whatever they want. It was a lovely way to sum up both the challenges and the possibilities that they are facing with their work. Who's going to SA?

In March, I'll be heading out to South Africa once again, to visit GAGA supported projects. It's always a great opportunity to meet up with people at the projects, and find out about their recent successes as well as any challenges they may be facing. At GAGA, we pride ourselves on strong relationships with both our projects and supporters. These trips to South Africa reignite those relationships, and give me a chance to be re-energised and give me a boost of motivation to support such worthy and amazing projects. I look forward to sharing stories from each of the projects I visit. But first... This year, I'll be joined by 5 others... Karen Morrison, GAGA UK Ambassador will be heading out to South Africa along with her colleague Kyle. Doreen Hodgson, (my grandma) has been busy fundraising for First Step Right and is excited to see how she can spend the donations to help purchase books, shelves, and more.
